Afternoons spent over looking the forbidden city. The worlds largest imperial palace, occupying 720,000 sq meters, is host to 90 palace quarters and courtyards, 980 buildings and over 8,728 rooms. Construction began under Emperor Yongle, third of the Ming Dynasty, in 1406 and was completed in 1420. The forbidden city was home to 24 emperors during its use, spanning from 1420 until the abdication of the last emperor in 1912 at the creation of the republic of China. •
