Although most of the Gambian country folk don’t have a lot of money in the family, livestock they have plenty. And these, are considered the family fortune or family bank sort of says. When a family is in need of some extra money they would sell or trade a goat, sheep or other animal, depending on the amount they would need. Not all of this family owned animals are shown in my capture, the range of animals this family had went from chickens up to cows.
Fun fact, after birth or purchase of a new livestock member, they would feed the small animal on exactly the same time for over three weeks. This ensures the family that the animals doesn’t wander off to far. “Tamed” livestock would roam freely over the land owned by the family and sometimes far beyond the borders. Almost like how the European housecats live.
