As a photographer in the Gambia you’ll find that, for capturing a perfect portrait, you’ll need to communicate a lot and have great patience. Most of the Gambians who are in an older age category don’t like to be captured on camera. Only after talking with the people few don’t mind anymore.. but only if you’ve asked them first. It’s in their culture, or rather old believes, that makes them think a piece of their soul will be taken at the same time of the photo.
Although most of the Gambian people don’t like to be photographed, the kids rarely seem to mind a photographer aiming their camera’s at them. Still, some will cower, run and hide when aiming your camera at them without asking but once in a while you’ll find a girl like this. A girl that isn’t afraid and even posed for a complete photoshoot.
Photographers tip: Asking and communicating opens a lot of doors. Even in the most difficult to photograph cultures.
Keep tuned for more Gambian content coming your way! . . . . .
