As a traveller in the Gambia, during your travels, the kids will call you you a Toubab at several moments. This term does not have derogatory connotations by itself but it’s just a used name for European descendants (“whites”). Mostly the term Toubab is associated with “wealthy travellers”. If one can afford to travel, one must be rich.
From origin, the word Toubab came to existence during the British colonization of West Africa. The African people would do jobs for these settlers and for their trouble they would receive two bobs. Two coins called a Bob for completing a task they would rather not do so themselves.
Unfortunately it didn’t took long before slavery started after these settlers colonized the West Africa’s. As most people know, a dark history with inhumane behaviour followed. A history from where we can still notice the global impact these days… One of them, being the word Toubab that’s still used up to this day. A couple of centuries after abolishing slavery. . . . . .
