. By far, the most popular sport and a pastime in the Gambia is soccer. Due to the country’s small population size the talent pool is limited and thus the reason Gambia’s international soccer success is very limited up to this day.
The sport itself however, is beloved by Gambian’s of all ages. In particular the young like to play the sport. If you plan to buy and gift a football to these kids, you’ll be thanked by those whom receive it and soon you’ll find the complete village playing soccer right in front of you, with the football just received.
The last few years, football in Gambia has experienced a considerable rise in popularity. Particularly with the advent and increased use of satellite television which has brought the likes of David Beckham & other international league players to people’s homes.
All seven regions of the nation are represented by clubs in first, second and third divisions of the national championship. Recently, an official women’s championship has also been organized at youth level. 2003 was the first time that the Gambia qualified for the African U-17 Championship which was held in Swaziland. Unfortunately they didn’t win this championship.
Soccer lovers will have a great time if there is a match planned in the Independence Stadium in Bakau. It’s Gambia’s biggest soccer arena and hosts local and international matches. These matches are mostly being attended by large crowds, due to the fact that tickets are quite inexpensive, they are free. Case you’re a soccer lover and near Bakau in your travels, don’t forget to see one of these free matches.
