Elephant stable, (Zanana Enclosure)Hampi.
The stable was built in 15th century in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture to provide shelter to the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The stable consists of eleven chambers roofed with alternating domes and twelve sides vaults.
It is believed that each individual stable housed two elephants. Metal hooks can be seen on the inside roof of each stable, used to tie the elephants.
The emphasis on the details of the structure however reveals the importance given to the royal elephants of the empire.
