Lamin Sannejallow, one of our tour guides from African adventure tours. A guy with a great sense of humour and, pretty good at speaking the Dutch language. One of the things I didn’t expect to be possible, before our trip to Gambia. I my mind I expected that English was the main language most of the Gambian people would speak, or at least a bit of English, since the Gambia used to be a British colony. He proved me to be wrong.
His name, Lamin, is one of the most normal male Gambian names you can think of. Kind of what John is for people coming from the united states and Peter would be if your roots layed in the Netherlands. Approximately 60% of the male Gambians are named Lamin, since this name has a deeper meaning. Besides that Lamin is a name, the name Lamin is also a concept. A concept that means somewhat like ‘first born’ or ‘first son’. For girls, the most used name is ‘Pa’ or so I’ve been told.
