Near the central river region of the Gambia, the ancient Wassu Stone Circles can be visited. It is believed, that these stone circles are the burial mounds of kings and chiefs of the ancient. The oldest of these circles are dated somewhere between 750 – 1000 AD, which makes them approximately 1200 years old.
The stones shapes and sizes vary from 10 to 12 stones, with sizes from 4 up to 6 meters across. With an average height of 5 feet and 9 inches (which is around 1.75 meters), the 11 large circle concentrations puzzled many archaeologists over the centuries.
Excavations during the 1800’s made sure the circles were used as burial sites but the stones themselves are younger than the actual graves… Spooky!
