Starving peasants should “eat cake” if they had no bread!! You hear this infamous quote and immediately we remember Marie Antoinette! THAT is the power of Media! It can spoil your reputation forever!
Marie Antoinette never really said those words and it seems her only fault was that she was a bored young girl who got judged by the press and public, because times were tough for France! She got married as a 15 year old, to a 16 year old future Louis XIV( they had never met before the marriage), to cement the alliance of the French and Habsburg thrones.
Life as a public figure was not easy for Marie Antoinette. Her marriage was difficult and, as she had very few official duties, she spent most of her time socializing and indulging her extravagant tastes. Widely circulated newspapers and inexpensive pamphlets poked fun at the queen’s profligate behavior and spread outlandish, even pornographic rumors about her. Before long, it had become fashionable to blame Marie Antoinette for all of France’s problems. Eventually, she had to pay for it with her life.. at the age of 37.
One of the examples of her extravagant taste is the Hameau (Hamlet), a model English farm built on the palace grounds so that she and her ladies-in-waiting could dress in elaborate costumes and pretend to be milkmaids and shepherdesses.
Here are few photos of the Hameau…of the poor rich princess.
PS: We had a tough time finding the Hameau, and went round and round before someone showed us the way.. the security guards recognised our faces.. we went in and out of the same gate so many times! Plus, we were very very tired… yet, all our tiredness went away once we reached the Hameau. .
