Versailles Palace
All those friends who have been also reading the long and sleep-inducing notes alongwith my photos are aware that I couldn’t visit 2 of the most popular destinations in Paris- Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum.
Going by number of tourists, in descending order, the too 3 are:
1. Louvre
2. Palace of Versailles
3. Eiffel Tower
Well…. thankfully we did visit number 2! But, for all those planning a trip…. a word of caution! Please don’t plan a trip if you are not comfortable walking. In the entire 2 week trip, the longest we walked was on this day… a energy sapping 28 km!!! And still… we couldn’t cover the entire grounds… it’s that HUGE!
The palace, which was the royal residence since 1682, is now a Monument historique and UNESCO World Heritage site, notable especially for the ceremonial Hall of Mirrors, the jewel-like Royal Opera, and the royal apartments; for the more intimate royal residences, the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon located within the park; the small rustic Hameau (Hamlet) created for Marie Antoinette; and the vast Gardens of Versailles with fountains, canals, and geometric flower beds and groves. The Palace was stripped of all its furnishings after the French Revolution, but many pieces have been returned and many of the palace rooms have been restored.
