. Within the vicinity of most of the major tourist hotels you’ll find small craft markets (called bengdulas) made up by a number of small stalls offering a selection of wood carvings. Mostly these stalls feature tribal masks, elephants, hunters, batiks, tie dye fabric prints, trade beads, gold and silver jewelry and locally made hand woven baskets.
Most of the artworks of Gambia can be found being peddled on the beaches as well as in the craft shops near hotel areas. Though, despite the influence of tourism in creating mass production of these art, you can still see authentic local handicrafts in the villages along the coast and the River Gambia. At the Brikama crafts market you can even order handicrafts which will be made by hand while you wait.
But even when you’re travelling through the country, you’ll see enough evidence that the Gambian people is very crafty. Most boats you’ll see look very happy and colorful. Woman’s clothing also are mostly very bright and colorful.
Even though the country is very brownish from itself, the Gambian people still know how to make every day a bit more colorful just by painting their belongings and creating their crafts. . . . . .
