Airbnb vs Hotels: is there really a difference?

The short answer is – you win either way. These two dominant forces in the hospitality industry provide a very healthy competition in which the consumer almost always benefits. If you are looking for the best stay possible in the destination you are planning on visiting, all it really takes is about thirty minutes to an hour of research to discover a place that will surely be full of unforgettable memories. Generally, Airbnb provides a more personalized stay (including both the good and the bad), and hotels have a wide range of amenities depending on what type you choose (ranging from luxurious 5-stars to the affordable motels).
We will detail a few comparisons between the two main types of stays for vacations. Giving you the honest opinions and facts of both, you will be able to finally choose which one is better on your visit.

Hotels

The possibilities are endless when it comes to extravagant stays in any destination. Burj Al Arab Jumeriah, Emirates PalaceAtlantis, and Upperhouse are some of the best hotels in the world.
The cool thing about hotels is that any big city you visit, there is bound to be a decent selection of 5-star rated hotels in the area. Unfortunately, those stars correlate with the dollars you have to spend on those amenities. A simple Google search including the words “5 star hotels in ____” will do it for you.
However, your budget may not align, or you may not need some of the extra add-ons and perks that some of these places offer. We completely understand that the activities are where the money should be directed and not the bed that you sleep in. There is no dearth of review websites nowadays, so you can look around for reviews too, this might help you narrow it down a bit. All we’re saying is that hotels come in all shapes and sizes in every city. Do a little digging, use some filters, and voila! Your dream stay pops right in front of your eyes.
Here are a few of the benefits of choosing a hotel:
– hotels generally have better views because of the elevation and high-rise effect
– hotels have every amenity you could including room service, towel service, dry cleaning, fitness rooms, etc. (and if they do not, usually you can call downstairs or walk a block to find something)
traveling with children is a little safe and more fun because hotels have great security measurements and hotels often will ensure they have enough facilities to accommodate kids and all their needs, irrespective of age group

Airbnb

If you have not heard of Airbnb, take a quick trip to their website to see how insanely awesome this company is. Essentially, they provide a service in which anyone can go on their website, search a city they plan on visiting, put on some filters (length of trip, children count, total people count, budget, amentities, etc), and then they provide the most relevant result to your desire. Instead of using an actual hotel, people host you in their homes. Yeah, that’s right. Some may think it is weird, some think it makes the trip all the more unique, but some just use the service on case-by-case circumstances depending on the destination. The users are trusted and verified, offer a much more homey stay than a hotel does, and typically offer significantly lower prices than a hotel does. Airbnb takes such a small cut from the profit of the owners: they started in 2007 and just this past year turned a profit from this amazing business structure. (Don’t worry, they are still one of the highest valued companies in the world).
Here are a few pros of renting an Airbnb from a homeowner:
– costs are significantly lower as the homeowners choose the price they rent out to consumers
– the stays include in-city experiences that you can not experience in a luxurious high-rise hotel
– the homeowners are typically very sincere and often provide you personalized suggestions and attention

Choosing Right

It really is a case-by-case decision. In some cities, Airbnb is a no-brainer and tends to save you a ridiculous amount of cash while still being downtown compared to a $300/night cost of a 5-star downtown hotel. But in other places, it may probably be better to choose a hotel where there are more people, and where there is peace in mind in terms of facilities and security. Keep in mind that the Airbnb offerings are run by individual homeowners, and some things may be a little off from what they describe in their offer, or you will have an absolutely wonderful experience with your host that is better than you’d ever expect.
