The 15 Most Picturesque Destinations in Europe to Visit

wherever you travel bne eSIM is with you

Europe is a lovely, heart-catching, and diverse region to visit, with many amazing places scattered across the globe. There are well over 800 of Europe’s most beautiful cities to visit and choose from; a daunting task for everybody! We’ve explored hundreds of European cities throughout the years and needed to share some of our absolute favorites with you. They’re simply a few of our outstanding highlights that you shouldn’t pass up. Some may appear to be more evident, while others may appear to be less well-known, but one thing they all have in common is their beauty.

Whether you’re visiting breathtaking locations in Spain, exquisite Italian treasures, or traditional Greek locations, you’ll undoubtedly find many things to do that we are sure you’ll like.

Nimes, France

Nimes is certainly one of the loveliest cities in Europe to travel when seeing the best sites in the South of France. It is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in France. Despite being much smaller than some other French cities, it has a lot of charm and attractiveness. Once you’ve arrived, visit Nimes’ historic Roman Amphitheatre, which is located in the city’s heart and still stands gloriously today. In reality, it is one of Europe’s best-preserved amphitheaters. You could perhaps catch a seasonal concert held within the Amphitheatre itself if you’re fortunate.

Also, don’t miss a visit to the Maison Carrée. It’s regarded as the world’s best-preserved Roman temple! If you want to get away from the city, head to Jardin de La Fontaine, where the gardens and fountains are charming to meander through, especially on a bright day. Lastly, Tour Magne, a magnificent Roman tower that overlooks the entire region, offers spectacular city views. The city is stunning and an absolute must-see for a long weekend getaway. It’s also far less expensive than some of the more well-known cities in the South of France.

Paris, France

Sure, sure! We’ve all known about France and how beautiful it is, right? There are dozens of picturesque sites strewn all around the city, undoubtedly making it one of the finest cities in Europe to tour. That isn’t to imply that Paris isn’t beautiful! It contains regions that aren’t as gorgeous or sought-after as any large metropolis, so it’s worth carefully arranging your trip. It’s a no-brainer, but don’t miss a trip to the top of the Eiffel Tower, preferably at sunset. The views here are stunning, but purchase your tickets in advance to escape the majority of the lineups. Surprisingly, many Parisians despised the Eiffel Tower when it was built. However, I’m confident that most people have grown to like it.

Hey, and don’t forget to stop by the Louvre to see some of Europe’s greatest famous paintings. Yes, you will be able to see the Mona Lisa. After that, visit some of the city’s more unusual little corners and gorge yourself on some of Paris’ most fantastic markets, which can be found throughout the city. Lastly, pay a visit to the Palais Garnier, which is absolutely stunning and suitable for royalty! The facilities are very attractive.

Matera, Italy

Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage city that is too magnificent to skip. It is one of the world’s historical cities that is still inhabited. Matera, located in southern Italy, has a rich history of cave houses, which contributes to the city’s beauty and uniqueness. Once you’ve arrived, make a reservation at one of the famous cave hotels and go for a walk around the old town. The historical section of the city is car-free (which is excellent), but it does imply you’ll need some comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestone streets. Also, make a point of visiting the town’s churches. They’re charming both inside and out!

Copenhagen, Denmark

I didn’t have high hopes; how naive I was. Copenhagen is magnificent and one of Europe’s most beautiful cities to visit, ideally for a weekend getaway! First, you must tour some of Copenhagen’s best-known tourist spots. You must see The Little Mermaid (though I found it to be a bit of a disappointment in the literal sense), Tivoli Gardens with its kitsch and classic rides (we enjoyed the wooden roller coaster), and Nyhavn! The latter is a vibrant harborfront district with brightly colored residences and many little eateries to visit.

Hey, don’t miss Rosenborg Castle’s crown jewels and beautiful apartments. Copenhagen also has an unending supply of canals, which are lovely for strolling. In the early evening, head over to the Meatpacking District to check out some of Copenhagen’s coolest pubs and eateries. There’s a little something for everyone here!

Florence, Italy

Florence has consistently been one of our favorite cities in Italy, particularly among the major cities. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful towns in Europe to explore, with a richness of history and natural magnificence. But, of course, you can also combine this with a long road trip across Tuscany. Now, at the height of summer, it may be a crowded city to visit; nevertheless, don’t let the masses deter you – you may still have a fantastic time visiting the city. Explore the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio, both located in the heart of Florence. Oh, and don’t forget to watch the sunset (or sunrise) from Piazzale Michelangelo. It’s about a 25-minute walk from Venice’s center, but it’s good enough to justify it. The scenery is spectacular.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest, in my perspective, is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe to explore when traveling to the continent’s eastern reaches. It’s a city with some of the most attractive architecture and buildings, and it’s completely accessible by flying from most of Europe (or train). The best feature is that much of Budapest is entirely walkable, making it a great city to explore on foot.

Visit Fisherman’s Bastion (particularly at sunset for vistas), the geothermal spas, the neo-gothic Parliament Building, and the Jewish Quarter for its interesting tiny bars and eateries as you explore the beautiful streets. We had a great time at Mazel Tov for supper; the food was delicious. We had a great time at Mazel Tov for supper; the food was excellent. Oh, and don’t miss the chance to stop by one of the city’s bars for a drink. Szimpla Kert, which is so kitsch and distinctive, was our personal fave.

Athens, Greece

While most visitors to Greece go to the famous Greek islands, Athens is also full of grandeur. Visiting the stunning ruins in and around Athens’ city center seemed like stepping back in time. Many deity sculptures and other masonry dating back to 400 BC may be seen all over the hills and streets. Also, the Acropolis should not be overlooked. It’s very stunning and truly unique! Also, don’t miss Monastiraki’s famous flea market. It’s chock-full of delectable treats that will make you salivate.

Prague, Czechia

Prague, the capital of Czechia, is a lovely city with a lot to offer visitors like us. Old Town Square and the famed Charles Bridge, which gets highly crowded on weekends, are both located here. Apart from the gorgeous sights, one of the most noticeable aspects of Prague is the lovely atmosphere that can be found in the city’s older districts. It’s very nice. On the other hand, St. Vitus Cathedral is worth a visit if you wish to go inside. The structure itself is really stunning and far too amazing to pass up. I won’t go into too much depth here, but if you’re planning a trip to Prague, take a look at the top spots to visit. You’re going to have a great experience.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona doesn’t require much of an explanation; it’s one of Europe’s most popular and beautiful vacation spots. All that being said, you can’t talk about beautiful European towns without including this treasure. Thus here we are! As Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona is perhaps most renowned for its stunning Gaudi architecture, which can be found along many of the city’s streets. Additionally, there’s his magnificent Sagrada Familia, which is almost done. It’s a city icon that’s hard to overlook. However, Barcelona has much more to offer than just the Sagrada Familia.

While in Barcelona’s center districts, you may easily reach Park Guell, the beautiful Gothic Quarter, and Casa Batllo. Take La Rambla for a stroll across the city; however, spend time looking at your pockets in this area as thieves are known to favor it. Oh, and don’t overlook the Picasso Museum, which is also in Barcelona. Finally, visit some of Barcelona’s most incredible eateries, which can be found all around the city; you’ll be filled when you leave. Have faith in me!

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

We’ve explored Amsterdam several times throughout the years, with each visit unique. This makes the city so wonderful; it’s large enough to be constantly evolving while also being historic enough to retain the flavor and elegance that makes it so lovely. Of course, you can enjoy wandering through the city’s canals, waterways, and bike paths, but there’s so much more to Amsterdam than that. For example, if you’re looking for art, go to the Van Gogh Museum, which has some fantastic pieces worth seeing.

Oh, don’t miss the numerous small cafes and unique eateries that line the narrow alleyways. We discovered most of them by chance, which is part of Amsterdam’s allure. Of course, you could be going down the smallest of back alleys and come upon the most incredible tourist trap. Have a look at our list of the top spots to visit in Amsterdam for a weekend getaway! It’s a wonderfully exciting and beautiful city that you shouldn’t miss out on.

Ronda, Spain

According to legend, Ronda was once a big metropolis that couldn’t stop fighting for years. Finally, God arrived and split the city apart because he was tired of constantly arguing. Literally! The city of Ronda was ripped in half, and the residents were divided by a large gorge until they could like each other.

After many years, the city’s residents eventually reconciled their disagreements, but the massive gorge remains. As a result, the now-friendly residents constructed a magnificent stone bridge to reunify the city. Whether you believe the legends, Ronda is one of Europe’s most beautiful locations to visit, particularly while traveling through Southern Spain.

Once you’ve arrived, visit the city’s medieval baths (Baos Arabes Yacimiento). It’s been around for centuries and is a must-see for anyone fascinated by the city’s history. Also, don’t miss the scenery from the famed bridge; it’s very breathtaking and worthwhile a stroll around (and down through the gorge). In addition, depending on how long your journey is, you can easily combine it with a longer excursion to Granada to see the Moorish Alhambra. If that’s your intention, get your Alhambra tickets ahead of time. Each day, a certain number of people are permitted to enter, and it always runs out.

Seville, Spain

Seville, another Spanish jewel, is a treasure trove of a city to explore for a three- to four-day journey. If you have the time, it’s much better for longer! Seville, located in the province of Andalusia, is one of the most beautiful towns in Europe to visit, not only in the winter but also in the warmer months. Once you’ve arrived, be sure to take a look around the famed Royal Alcázar, which dates back centuries. Its structure is stunning, and it stays faithful to its Moorish roots. Next, you must wander down around Plaza de Espana. The entire promenade area is unique, and the design incorporates inspirations from all throughout Spain. Lastly, see Seville Cathedral’s bell tower (La Giralda). It’s a UNESCO-protected landmark in Seville that’s just stunning.

Hey, and don’t hesitate to try some carrillada, a braised Iberico pork dish that is quite famous in the city.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, our favorite city in Portugal, is a jumble of small hilltop towns that have all been welded together by a single central location. It’s magnificent, historical, and charming, especially with incredible views from all around the city. Take some time to browse the lined alleys near the Santa Justa Elevator after landing in this Portuguese jewel before continuing up the hills to Lisbon’s Alfama neighborhood. It’s pretty lovely, and it’s still brimming with magnificent Portuguese tiled structures. Take a look inside Torre de Belem near the water; nevertheless, be prepared for a line, especially on weekends.

Take a look inside Torre de Belem if you’re near the water; nevertheless, be prepared for a line, especially on weekends. Lastly, don’t miss to sample all of the delectable Portuguese delicacies available around the city. You’ll be spoiled for choice with so many delicious eateries. Stop by Pastéis de Belém for their famed egg and cinnamon tarts for dessert. Fantastic!

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most beautiful towns to visit, especially if you’re seeking a city with a thousand-year history. When you arrive in beautiful Scotland, make a point of visiting the Royal Mile area of the Old Town. It joins Edinburgh Castle (on a prehistoric volcanic bute) with Holyrood Palace and is the city’s historic neighborhood (the official royal residence in Scotland). Both of these places are important to see and gorgeous to look at. Just make sure you get your tickets ahead of time, as there are usually time limits on the number of people who can visit at short intervals.

Stop into the White Horse Oyster Bar on the Royal Mile for a delightful treat, as they serve some of Edinburgh’s best seafood. Just make sure to reserve a table ahead of time because it’s a small, popular eatery.

The historic museums, the views from Carlton Hill and Arthur’s Seat, and the New Town’s grid streets and adorable tiny shops are lovely. It’s a fantastic city to live in.

Bath, England

Like Nimes in France, Bath is a Roman city that is absolutely stunning to see. It’s a little city in the west of England, yet it’s one of Europe’s most beautiful destinations for a day trip or weekend. After you’ve situated in, visit the Roman Baths to see how the Romans bathed in the city. It is one of England’s top Roman sights to see because it is so well preserved. Do you have a hunger pang? Sally Lunn’s amazing baked buns are worth a visit. It has been continuing strong since the 1600s.

Visit the Thermae Spa, which pumps geothermally heated water to the rooftop pool if you feel like a swim. It’s pretty nice, especially if you’re looking for a relaxing time.

Do you want to learn more about the area? Rent a car and go to the Cotswolds’ chocolate box settlements reasonably close by. They’re very stunning and appear to be straight out of a dream.
