The Berlin Wall divided East and West Berlin from 1961 to 1989. East Berlin, along with all Eastern European countries, were occupied by the communist Soviet Union. Under communism, it was illegal to travel outside of your respective country or even across the wall to the West side of the city, which was not communist. Today, you can visit a section of the Berlin Wall which consists of multiple murals painted by over 100 artists – the most famous of which is “The Fraternal Kiss” depicting two East German and Soviet Union politicians kissing.
