We’ve seen that road trips are becoming more common in people’s getaways. There are limitless sites to explore with friends and family, including some of the most picturesque places in North America. There are stunning national parks.
The advantage of traveling in a camper van is the freedom and flexibility to enjoy the route as much as the destinations. When you drive in a converted van, you’ll be able to stay overnight in places where there aren’t usually motels or even campgrounds. It also allows you to visit locations that are typically bleak and unexplored.
The United States is one of the best destinations to go on a van road trip. We’ve put up a list of our favorite places to go.
California
California is perhaps the most popular state to visit with your camper van because of its variety; whether it’s the fascinating coastline pull outs along Highway 1, the stunning Sierra Nevadas, or the spectacular desert they’ll all have you coming back. Here’s a list of places where our customers and we like to take our mobile homes.
Yosemite
This national park offers plenty of reasons to travel, including some of the greatest hiking, photography, and mountaineering in the world. The ideal months to visit are May and September, but if you want to avoid the crowds and don’t mind the cold (and your van has a heater), we suggest going in February or March; it may be snowy, but you might get to watch the famed firefall.
The Coastline
We suggest starting in San Diego and driving up to Oregon on the 1 or 101. The picturesque cities of Pismo Beach. You can surf the bulk of the coastline depending on the city and swell in Pismo Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Humboldt.
Other Highlights from California
Joshua Tree is undoubtedly a must-see, and it also offers world-class rock climbing if that’s your thing. Visit Sequoia National Park after your stay in J Tree to witness the world’s largest tree (by volume)! In the summer, Lake Tahoe is a paddle boarder’s dream come true, with long overnight hikes and paddle boarding opportunities.
Utah
Utah is one of the most popular destinations for van lifers, with five national parks, 45 state parks, and 27 scenic byways. If you want to see all of these destinations, you may need to expand your weekend journey to a week-long road trip. If you’re going on a long trip, develop an outline or use a road trip planner to organize your route.
Zion
This region features much more than breath-taking treks and is a haven for adventure photographers, with slot canyons and petroglyphs. Take your time driving through this park; you’ll be tempted to pull over at one of the many viewpoints along the road to take in the scenery. We suggest starting at the South Entrance and heading north for the finest sunrise views.
Arches
You’ve come to the correct place, if you see orange! There are numerous road trip vans parked throughout the park for notable climbs such as the Elephant Butte and the Tower of Babble. There are 52 campsites, 28 of which can be reserved in advance, as well as plenty of free camping close beyond the park’s boundaries .
BLM Land
In Utah, you won’t feel strange camping in a van; the state is teaming with van lifers on road vacations, most of whom are scattered camping. On public land, dispersed camping is permitted for up to 14 days in a 28-day period. Utah boasts some of the nicest BLM land in the country, with everything from built campgrounds to broad open expanses, and it’s generally free. To see the entire list, download iOverlander.
Colorado
Colorado is the only state with activities in all four seasons for outdoor enthusiasts. There are so many activities to choose from that it’s difficult to do them all — check out the top 10 hikes in Colorado, go fishing for 35 different warm and cold-water fish species, and camp in one of the 4,000 state parks.
